Starting University and Freshers

Starting university in the UK is a seven-week window that runs from sending back your halls contract in July, to enrolment, to the end of Freshers' Week in late September. The parts nobody tells you are the small admin things: GP registration, council tax exemption, matriculation, a TV licence for the communal kitchen, finding a GP before you need one.

What this pillar covers

Freshers' Week Preparation covers the social-life version: what to pack, how to actually meet people, whether society sign-up week is worth it (yes). Technology Essentials Checklist ranks laptop + software choices for the first year. Banking Setup, Essential Accounts and Registering with a GP are the admin minimums. Accommodation Halls vs Private explains the year-one choice and why most first-years regret private lets. Balancing Social Life is the one that actually affects your grades.

The first two weeks

You will arrive tired and overwhelmed. Plan for that: register for student council tax exemption online within the first fortnight, take gas and electricity meter readings the moment you unlock your halls door and let the people at home know you are alive. Then do nothing demanding until Freshers' Week starts. Jet-lagged decisions about societies and housemates do not age well.

What to ignore

Almost every "100 things to do in Freshers" listicle. Do four things well: sign up to one society that is actually about your hobby, cook one meal a week with your flatmates, book your GP appointment in the first fortnight and attend every single lecture in week one (lecture attendance in week one predicts the rest of the year).
