UCAS and University Applications

UCAS applications are the gate that decides where you study for three or four years, and the form you fill in over one weekend in October. The numbers (five choices, one personal statement, one reference) are deceptively simple. The judgement calls (which five courses, how to write the statement, whether to go for a stretch offer) are where every applicant gets stuck.

What this pillar covers

UCAS Step-by-Step is the timeline version: from registration through reference to offers day. Personal Statement and Personal Statement Examples cover the longest single piece of writing you will ever submit to a stranger. Entry Requirements Explained demystifies why one course asks for AAA and another ABB for the same subject. Admissions Tests and BMAT/UCAT/LNAT cover the extra assessments a handful of competitive courses add on top of the main application.

How to pick your five choices

One ambitious, one insurance, three in the middle. Ambitious means a grade or two above your predicted; insurance means one below. The middle three should be courses you would accept and universities you would live in. Never use an insurance choice as a wildcard, if you flop on results day, you are committing to that place.

Results day and after

Results day is Thursday 13 August 2026 for A-Levels and Tuesday 4 August for Scottish Qualifications results. UCAS Hub updates from 8am BST. If your firm choice is confirmed, nothing further to do. If not, the Results Day and Clearing guide explains how the 10:00 UK time Clearing-choice window works, what self-release does, and when to call universities directly.
