1. How to verify your status for student tech discounts

You cannot flash a university ID at an online checkout. Retailers require digital verification through one of three platforms.

UNiDAYS and Student Beans are free and the default for almost every major tech retailer (Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, Dell* and HP*). Sign up for both because exclusive partnerships rotate. UNiDAYS tends to hold Apple and Dell; Student Beans often has Currys, Argos and mobile networks.

TOTUM is the NUS-backed platform. The free digital tier covers most tech discounts. The £14.99/year TOTUM+ tier adds a physical proof-of-age PASS ID card and a digital ISIC. Worth it if you regularly need proof of age. For tech discounts alone, the free tier is plenty.

Top tip

Set up your verification accounts the moment your university issues your.ac.uk email. You don't need to wait until your course officially starts; many discounts apply from acceptance.

If you're an international student and your home university email doesn't work, you can manually verify by uploading your formal acceptance letter to the UNiDAYS or Student Beans support team. Re-verify each year while you're enrolled. Once you graduate and the university deactivates your email, you lose access to most student tech discounts.

2. Apple student discounts on laptops, tablets and desktops

The Apple Education Store* offers year-round discounts to current students, newly-accepted students, and parents buying on their behalf. Discount runs around 7 to 10% on Macs, iPads and iMacs depending on the model. Verified via UNiDAYS.

According to Apple's UK newsroom, the new MacBook Air with M5 chip launched in March 2026. Education pricing starts at £999 for the 13-inch and £1,199 for the 15-inch model. The base configuration now includes 16GB of unified memory and 512GB SSD storage as standard.

The annual Back to University promotion runs from mid-July to mid-October. Confirmed via Apple's UK terms page: in 2025 the promotion bundled in a free pair of AirPods 3rd generation with a qualifying Mac or iPad, with a discounted upgrade to AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. Apple Pencil and other accessory upgrades are also discounted with iPad purchases during the promotion.

You also get 20% off AppleCare+ when bought with a new device. AppleCare+ covers accidental damage, which is worth having if you cart your laptop between lectures, the library and home most days of the week. A MacBook screen replacement out of warranty typically runs £400 to £500.

If you study a creative degree, note that Apple retired the one-off Pro Apps Bundle for Education in January 2026 and replaced it with Apple Creator Studio, a subscription. According to Apple's UK Creator Studio page*, verified students and educators pay £2.99/month or £29/year (against £12.99/month standard), with a one-month free trial. It covers Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage. The old perpetual bundle is now only offered when you buy a Mac through the Education Store.

The Apple Education discount does NOT apply to iPhones, Apple Watches, AirPods sold standalone, or accessories. For iPhones, look at carrier deals or refurbished options.

3. Windows laptops: Dell, HP and Lenovo student discounts

Windows laptops often deliver more raw spec for the money than Apple. The major manufacturers run dedicated student portals.

Dell Advantage for Students typically discounts XPS and Inspiron laptops by 5 to 15% (the headline 20% figure rotates by season). Codes are accessible via UNiDAYS.

HP Education Store runs rolling 5 to 20% codes on laptops and 15 to 30% on peripherals (mice, keyboards, printers) via UNiDAYS and Student Beans.

Lenovo* MyEdu typically takes 5 to 15% off ThinkPad and Yoga ranges via UNiDAYS.

Watch out

Always compare the student store price against the public sale price during Black Friday and January sales. The headline public discount sometimes beats the student rate.

When choosing a laptop, check your course requirements. Engineering, architecture and computer science students often need specific processors or dedicated graphics for CAD, MATLAB or compiling code. A £400 budget laptop will struggle with AutoCAD or large datasets. Aim for a minimum of 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD to last a three or four-year degree. Use our student money guides to plan for higher-end purchases.

4. Software subscriptions for student devices

Don't pay for productivity software you can get free. Most UK universities hold institutional Microsoft 365 licences. According to Microsoft Education, eligible students get Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams and 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage free using their.ac.uk email. Sign in at office.com or microsoft365.com first; only consider a personal subscription if your university doesn't include desktop apps.

Design, photography and film students are likely to need Adobe Creative Cloud. The All Apps student plan is around £16.24/month for the first year, around 70% off the standard ~£56/month rate. Includes Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, After Effects and Lightroom.

Computer science and software engineering students should claim the GitHub Student Developer Pack. Free with.ac.uk verification. Includes free GitHub Copilot, free JetBrains IDEs (IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm), $200 in DigitalOcean credit, $100 in Microsoft Azure credit, free Namecheap.me domain, free MongoDB credits, plus around 50 other partner offers.

Architecture and engineering students can download free educational licences for AutoCAD, Maya, Revit and Fusion 360 directly from the Autodesk Education portal.

Notion offers a free Education Plus plan to verified students with.ac.uk email. Unlimited blocks, version history and AI features included.

If you do paid work or share files on public Wi-Fi, a VPN is reasonable to add. NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN all run rolling student discounts via UNiDAYS or Student Beans, typically taking 60% to 80% off multi-year plans.

5. Mobile phone contracts and student tariffs

If you already own a phone, a SIM-only rolling deal saves the most money. See our full student phone plans guide for the breakdown. Headline picks: SMARTY (£18 unlimited on Three), giffgaff* (from £6 on O2), VOXI (£10 with free social media on Vodafone), Lebara (best for international students).

Of the major networks, EE typically offers a 20% airtime discount via Student Beans, O2 runs similar 20% offers on Refresh contracts, and Vodafone takes around 10% off selected plans. Always compare the discounted major-network price against an MVNO; even with the discount, SMARTY or giffgaff usually still wins on monthly cost.

VOXI (on Vodafone) keeps free Endless Social Media on its £10/month plan. That is unusual among UK networks: data on Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, X (Twitter), Pinterest and Facebook Messenger doesn't count against your allowance.

If you want a new handset, check the Samsung Student Shop: typically up to 20% off Galaxy S-series flagships, plus seasonal bundles with Galaxy Buds or smartwatches.

Calculate the total cost of any 24-month contract before signing. A flagship phone on contract often costs £200 to £400 more over two years than buying outright (or refurbished from Back Market) and pairing with a £10 SIM-only deal. A missed monthly payment damages your credit score and affects future renting and borrowing.

6. Entertainment subscriptions at student rates

Subscription fatigue drains student bank accounts. Switching every existing entertainment subscription to its student rate is one of the highest-impact savings you can make. Re-verify yearly.

ServiceStandard / monthStudent / monthFree trial
Amazon Prime Student£8.99£4.496 months
Spotify Premium Student£12.99£5.991 month
Apple Music Student£10.99£5.991 month (with free Apple TV+ included)
YouTube Premium Student£12.99£6.991 month

According to Spotify, the Premium Student plan is £5.99/month, verified through SheerID for up to four years. Apple Music is also £5.99/month for students and includes free Apple TV+ for the duration of the subscription.

According to Amazon UK, Prime Student gives 6 months free, then £4.49/month or £47.49/year. Includes free next-day delivery, Prime Video, Amazon Music Prime and Prime Gaming. Discount runs for up to four years or until you graduate, whichever comes first.

If you live in private rented accommodation and watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer, you must hold a TV Licence (£180/year from 1 April 2026). If you move out for the summer holidays and aren't using live TV at your term-time address, you can claim a refund for unused months from TV Licensing.

7. Refurbished tech: stretching the budget

You don't need brand-new equipment. Refurbished tech is the easiest way to bypass retail markups while keeping the warranty.

The Apple Certified Refurbished store* tests every device, fits a new battery and outer shell, and ships in official packaging. Same one-year warranty as new. Typical saving: 15 to 20%. Note that Apple Education discount does NOT stack on top of refurbished prices.

Good to know

Apple Education Pricing does not apply to items in the Apple Certified Refurbished store. Pick whichever route gives the lower final price.

Third-party refurbishers offer steeper discounts on older models. Back Market aggregates UK and EU refurbishers and runs rolling student promotions via UNiDAYS, often 5% extra off already-reduced prices. musicMagpie is UK-based and strong on iPhones and refurbished tablets. John Lewis Outlet sells ex-display stock with John Lewis's standard 2-year guarantee on most electricals.

When buying refurbished from third parties, insist on at least a 12-month warranty, a clear returns policy, and (for phones and laptops) a battery health guarantee of 80% or higher.

Once your tech setup is sorted, our broadband comparison tool finds 9-month student broadband contracts so your new gear has reliable internet at home.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a TOTUM card to get Apple student discounts?

No. Apple uses UNiDAYS to verify student status for online purchases in the UK. Create a free UNiDAYS account using your university email. In a physical Apple Store, your university acceptance letter or valid university ID is enough.

Can I get student tech discounts before my course starts?

Yes. You become eligible for most student discounts as soon as your university confirms your place and issues your academic email. If you have an acceptance letter but no email yet, contact UNiDAYS or Student Beans support to manually verify your status.

Does the Apple student discount apply to iPhones?

No. Apple Education Pricing only covers Mac computers, iPads, and select accessories like the Apple Pencil or Magic Keyboard. iPhones, Apple Watches and standalone AirPods are sold at full retail. To save on an iPhone, look at carrier deals or the Apple Certified Refurbished store.

How long does Amazon Prime Student last?

Amazon Prime Student lasts up to four years or until you graduate, whichever comes first. You start with a 6-month free trial, then pay £4.49/month or £47.49/year. Provide your graduation date at sign-up; Amazon upgrades you to standard Prime once that date passes.
